Development Background

The heightened risk of credit card fraud has intensified market demand for solutions that enhance both security and user convenience.

Traditional smart card designs have been constrained by dimensional limitations, where additional functionality inevitably compromised the standard card form factor.

The integration of IoT capabilities presented multiple engineering challenges: maintaining industry-standard dimensions required ultra-thin components, ensuring long-term battery stability without swelling, and delivering consistent power supply to support advanced IoT functions. Through the adoption of EnerCera Li-ion rechargeable battery, smart card manufacturers successfully addressed these technical obstacles, enabling the development of feature-rich IoT credit cards that comply with standard dimensional specifications.

The EnerCera's advantages

✔️ Ultra-thin 0.45mm bendable battery
✔️ High capacity to support fingerprint authentication and BLE communication
✔️ Compatible with hot laminate processing in IC card manufacturing

Ultra-thin 0.45mm bendable battery

EnerCera battery's ultra-thin design enables the integration of IoT functionality while maintaining standard credit card thickness (0.76mm). It combines thinness and durability that conventional batteries could not achieve, allowing it to coexist with other electronic components in the limited space inside the card. The weight remains almost identical to that of everyday credit cards.

Stable Power Supply and Wireless Charging Enable IoT Functionality

EnerCera battery provides stable power for multiple functions including Bluetooth communication, NFC functionality, and LED illumination. It can be used for extended periods without frequent charging, allowing continuous use of everyday payment and tracking functions. Compatibility with Qi wireless charging technology enables easy charging without cable connections. EnerCera battery's fast-charging characteristics allow for efficient charging in a short time.

Long Lifespan and Non-Expansion Properties Ideal for Cards

EnerCera battery is resistant to expansion even after repeated charge-discharge cycles. This maintains the card's flatness over long periods of use, preventing reading problems with payment terminals.

Use Cases

CARDNATION Co., Ltd, the developer of the IoT credit card equipped with EnerCera battery, received a 2025 Honoree in FinTech award at CES 2025.

IoT Credit Card Features:

▪️Works with smartphones to display the card's current location on a map in real-time, supporting loss prevention
▪️Pairs the smartphone and card to immediately detect card loss by sending a notification when they are separated beyond a certain distance
▪️Equipped with remote control functions, allowing users to ring their smartphone from the card or control device power
▪️Built-in LED can be remotely flashed to easily locate the card in dark places or inside wallets
▪️Seamlessly supports touch payments through NFC functionality

The IoT credit card, which implements multiple functions while maintaining credit card thinness, is made possible by the ultra-thin EnerCera battery, generating significant positive feedback from card users.

Expected Technological Contribution

As cashless society advances, balancing security and convenience in payment methods is an important challenge. IoT credit cards go beyond being merely payment methods to serve as tools for loss prevention and device connectivity with smartphones. Additionally, by integrating functions that were previously managed separately into a single card through smart device connectivity, they contribute to simplifying personal belongings. The adoption of EnerCera battery is expected to enable high-functionality smart cards like IoT credit cards that were previously technically difficult to realize.
