Development Background

When transporting high value-added products such as food and pharmaceuticals, there is a risk of quality deterioration if a certain temperature or humidity is exceeded during cargo transportation, loading and unloading, and warehouse storage. Therefore, advanced temperature and humidity management is required throughout the entire transportation process.

For such temperature and humidity management, large disposable primary batteries or rechargeable secondary batteries have been used in IC tags. However, the installation locations are limited, and battery charging and disposal have complicated the logistics process.

Therefore, efforts were made to develop a compact temperature and humidity management sensor tag that can detect anomalies even in harsh environments, such as low or high temperatures, while minimizing the required maintenance.

The EnerCera Advantages

✔️ Stable power supply and long-term operation even in harsh environments of -20°C
✔️ Ultra-thin 0.45mm bendable battery for curved surfaces such as bottles
✔️ Enables wirelessly rechargeable tags

Stable power supply and long-term operation even in harsh environments of -20°C

Rigorous tests have proven that EnerCera can provide stable power sharing and long-term operation even in harsh environments such as inside refrigerators and freezers, as well as outside in cold weather. It can handle a wide range of temperatures that existing secondary batteries cannot and can be used in direct sunlight and cold chains.

Ultra-thin 0.45mm bendable battery for curved surfaces such as bottles

The realized bendable thin sensor tag can also be attached to curved surfaces. By mounting the EnerCera pouch on Innolux Japan's flexible circuit board, a tag with high design freedom is realized. Thanks to its thinness and bending resistance, it can be attached anywhere, such as to bottles and on boxes, to log sensing data such as temperature and humidity.

Enables wirelessly rechargeable tags

EnerCera enables long-distance wireless data communication via BLE, LPWA, etc., and can be used repeatedly without charging, making it suitable for logging devices. Using reusable tags rather than disposable batteries is expected to provide both medium- to long-term cost advantages and environmental considerations.

Use Case

In a 2022 demonstration experiment exporting Italian wine to Japan, the tag was used for 150 days of temperature and humidity monitoring. Furthermore, in December 2023, a demonstration experiment was conducted to export Japanese sake from a sake brewery in Akita to Singapore. Sensor tags were attached inside the sake shipping boxes to record temperature data during the approximately 10 days of transportation, and the quality was checked by confirming the data upon arrival. It has been proven that EnerCera can be used for 8 months (240 days) on a full charge, and the battery is expected to be utilized for quality control of various regions and high value-added products in the future.

Expected Technological Contribution

As demand for traceability increases in the future, demand for quality monitoring sensors during transportation is also expected to grow. The potential applications for sensor tags are expanding, such as for transporting vaccines, exporting and importing wine and sake, and managing the temperature and humidity of artworks.
EnerCera is a rare lithium-ion battery that can operate stably at low temperatures, and it will meet the needs for power sources in wireless devices where low-temperature compatibility is an issue.

Testimonials

EnerCera, which is thin and light, is indispensable for our new business. Innolux's new business utilizes printed electronics technology that uses extremely small amounts of water or chemical solutions and low-cost equipment with low manufacturing energy in an additive process. Through this technology, we developed FHE devices that realize long-term operation and measurement in previously impossible locations or scenes, despite being thin and lightweight.
